What Is PIR Insulation?
PIR insulation boards are popular for all types of construction projects. The PIR board extremely low thermal conductivity, versatility, and ease of use make them a preferred choice for many building contractors.
These PIR boards are suitable for insulating walls, roofs, and floors, and they are also commonly used in cavity wall insulation. PIR foam boards are exceptionally strong and durable, maintaining their structural integrity over time without sagging or weakening.
What Is PIR Insulation Board? What Are They Made Of?
PIR (polyisocyanurate) foam insulation is created by combining polyols and isocyanates under high temperature and pressure, forming a strong, rigid, and heat-resistant core for the insulation sheets.
The PIR board typically measure about 2.4 meters in length and 1.2 meters in width, with thicknesses ranging from 10mm to 80mm. To boost their thermal insulation capabilities, a layer of low-emissivity foil is bonded to the polyisocyanurate foam board. This aluminum foil layer helps retain and enhance heat within the material.
The aluminum foil facings are designed to reflect heat and keep it confined within a specific area. For instance, when installed in a building's ceiling, the foil reflects heat back into the structure, warming it from the floor up. Additionally, these foil facings act as a continuous vapor barrier, protecting the board and the installation from moisture.
What Are The Uses Of PIR board?
As mentioned earlier, PIR insulation is versatile in application. Some of the common uses of PIR boards include:
Wall Insulation - Polyisocyanurate insulation boards can be used to insulate walls, and they can also be used to insulate cavity walls.
Floor insulation - PIR foam boards can be used for suspended floor insulation.
Roof Insulation - PIR insulation is ideal to insulate on both pitched roof and flat roof applications.
